645 - 12th month 22nd day, 702/ 57 years

Uno no Sarara no Himemiko was the second daughter of Naka no Oh'ye no Miko. Her mother's name was Wochi no Iratsume. Wochi no Iratsume is a daughter of Soga no Kurayamada no Ishikawa Maro. According to Nihon Shoki, Uno no Sarara no Himemiko was of reserved manners and a liberal disposition. Although the daughter of an Emperor, she loved courtesy and economy, and was possessed of motherly virtues.

In 657, she was united to Oh'ama no Miko as his consort. In 662, she gave birth to Kusakabe no Miko in the Palace of Ohtsu in the capital of Oumi.

In the 10th month of 671, she followed the Shamon Oh'ama no Miko in order to avoid the suspicious dislike of the Court. The sixth month next year she followed him when he took refuge in the Eastern provinces. She addresses the troops and mingled with the throng, until at length they together formed a plan by which several tens of thousands of fearless men were separately ordered to take up their posts in all the most defensible positions.

In the seventh month, the troops slew the Imperial Prince Ohtomo no Miko and sent his head to be shown at the Fuwa Palace.

In 673 she was raised to the rank of Empress-consort at the same time when Oh'ama no Miko assumed the Imperial Dignity. She had assisted the Emperor in pacifying the Empire. It constantly happened that in the conduct of business, her ready advice on Government matters was of the greatest assistance.

On the 9th day of the 9th month of 686, Emperor Temmu died. She presided over the Court and exercised control.

On the 2nd day of the 10th month, because Ohtsu no Miko's treason was discovered, she ordered to arrest him, together with his supporters who had been led astray by Ohtsu no Miko. The next day she made Ohtsu strangle himself.

In the 4th month of 689, her son, Kusakabe no Miko, died. She decided to hand over the Imperial Dignity until Karu no Miko, Kusakabe's son, grew up. Next year she assumed the Dignity.

In 694, she removed the Palace to Fujiwara.

In 696, she abdicated the Imperial Dignity to Karu no Miko and kept presiding over the Court as the Empress Dowager until she died in 702.

Her body was cremated, the first instance of the application of this Indian practice to a Japanese sovereign.

She was buried at the Hinokuma no Oh-uchi Misasagi, the same Misasagi as that of her husnand, Emperor Temmu.
