Tajima no Himemiko's mother was Higami no Otome (Lady Higami), whose father was Fujiwara no Kamatari, who co-worked with Naka no Oh'ye no Miko when they slew Soga no Iruka in 645.

She was made a wife of Takechi no Miko by the Emperor's order. He was much older than her, so she was not very happy with him because he looked like her father for her. She privately loved her half brother, Hodzumi no Miko. Some of her poems suggesting her love of him were collected in the Man'yoshu poetry.

However, she could not get married with him until she died in 708. After her death, he produced a lament poem on her, which was also collected in Man'yoshu.

天武天皇と氷上娘の娘。母・氷上娘の父は645年の蘇我入鹿討伐に勲功のあった藤原鎌足。

天皇の命により高市皇子の妻となったが、高市皇子はかなり年上で、父のように思えたかもしれないほどだったため、異母兄の穂積皇子を密かに想っていたようである。穂積皇子への相聞歌が万葉集に収められている。

しかし穂積皇子との結婚は死ぬまで叶わず、但馬皇女が亡くなったあと、穂積皇子は彼女への挽歌を万葉集に残している。
