Stove 竈
It is thought that large stable furnished stoves made of stones or clay were used in the palace or large temples to put large iron-made cauldrons and cookware on them, though no such things were excavated before. Former sites of kitchen of general households were not found either.
宮殿や大きな寺では大掛かりな石造りまたは土造りの築き竈があり、鉄製の釜や鍋を上に置いたと考えられているが、それらしきものは未だ発掘されていない。一般家庭の台所の跡も未だ発見されていない。
Pottery 器
Many of pots, dishes, cups and other kitchenware are made from coils of clay, called hajiki or sueki. They were produced at the provinces of Yamato, Kawachi, Owari, Bizen, Totoumi, etc., and brought from those places to the capital.
Richer people used iron- or copper-made cauldrons or cookware. Glassware was used among high classed noblemen.
甕、皿、器などの台所用品は多くは土器が用いられ、土師器、須恵器と呼ばれた。これらは大和、河内、尾張、備前、遠江などで製造され、都へともたらされた。
裕福な人は鉄製や銅製の釜や鍋を用いた。ガラス製品は高級貴族の間で用いられた。
Fridge 冷蔵庫
An ice house, or himuro, was used to store ice throughout the year. It was built within a cave in a cooler area such as a place deep inside mountains. During the winter, ice was brought into the house thatched with straw so that the ice would remain frozen for many months and it could be used as a source of ice during summer months.
氷を一年中保存するため、氷室が用いられた。氷室は藁葺きで、山奥深い場所などの涼しいところの洞窟の中に立てられ、冬の間に氷が運び込まれ、そのまま夏まで使えるよう貯蔵された。
